Late to the party but: Beijing 2008 was the first Olympics I was conscious for (I was 7) and so those 5 little guys are very nostalgic to me. I remember the McDonalds plush versions of them that came with a happy meal. But you only got one, so you had to buy many happy meals to get all 5. I just remember all the merch surrounding them, so they will always have a very special place in my heart.

Does no one here understand the historical reference to starting a race with a gunshot? Before sound effect boards were used, variants of actual gunshots were used because of their distinctive sound and volume, which made them easy to identify and hear above the ambient noise of stadiums. Not to mention clay pigeon/skeet shooting. This involves (air) pistols, rifles, etc. Everyone thinks it's a cute joke here but never asks about the reasons why. Now you know.

My first plane ride was in a seaplane tourist flight over Seattle. My second house in Seattle was on Lake Union, so I got to see the seaplanes every day. 20 years later, when I became a pilot, I rented a helicopter from Boeing Field, flew over Lake Union and had to dodge one of the seaplanes.

Chicago knocked it out of the park with their flag. I'm not from there (and have never even been there) but I'll confidently claim they have the best city flag in the US. I will also use this opportunity to shamelessly plug Roman Mars' TED Talk about why most city flags are garbage.
